Winter is coming

Fall is coming to an end, and winter is almost upon us. Here at Jojo Modern Pets we want to make sure that you and your dog are ready to handle the cold weather. Below we have listed a few tips for making sure that your pup has a happy and healthy winter.

Insulated shelter is a must

If your dog spends most of their time outside, a properly insulated doghouse is a must for the winter months. Cedar chips, a plush dog bed, or on oversized blanket are all excellent ways to help your furry friend stay warm during those cold winter nights. Also, be sure that the entrance to your dog’s shelter is protected from the wind, as a drafty breeze can negate any other insulating measures.

Keep those paws cared for

Ideally, dog booties are the preferred form of protection for your dog’s paws during the winter. However, if your dog refuses to wear booties you can help protect their paws by ensuring that the fur between their pads is trimmed. Paw fur can get wet and freeze during the winter, leaving your canine companion with sore paw pads that can crack and blister. Try keeping a towel by the door that can be used specifically to dry your dog’s paws after they return from outside.

Provide more food

If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors during the winter, be sure to provide them with more food. The extra food will ensure that your pup retains enough body fat to properly insulate themselves, and will also keep your dog’s fur in good shape. Additionally, consider switching to a plastic or heated water dish during the winter to make sure that your furry friend’s water doesn’t freeze. A plastic water dish will also guarantee that your dog’s tongue won’t get stuck to a frozen metal dish.

Keep antifreeze and de-icers properly stored

As with any season, be sure to keep an eye out for any antifreeze that leaks from your car. Dog’s are extremely attracted to the smell and taste of antifreeze, and will not hesitate to lap up any that they find. Also, avoid taking your dog around areas that have been treated with salt or other de-icers. Not only are these chemicals bad for your pup’s paws, but they could also have have potentially toxic effects on your dog’s health.

By following the above advice, we here at Jojo Modern Pets are confident that you and your dog will make it through the winter with ease. Visit our website today, and check out our selection of dog beds and blankets to keep your dog warm all winter long.
